Taking piano lessons is the beginning of a fascinating journey that will hopefully become a life-long hobby. You are learning to play a new instrument and learning a new language, all at the same time. Here are 7 great tips on getting started.
Tip 1 – Finding a great teacher is your number one goal. Your teacher should inspire and motivate you.
Tip 2 – Whether you choose a digital piano or a traditional acoustic piano, choose the best instrument that you can afford. The sound should inspire you.
Tip 3 – Choose a seat that is the right height for you. The piano keys should be level with your waist when you sit down to play.
Tip 4 – Learn the names of the piano keys. Avoid the temptation to write the letter names in black marker pen on your piano! By learning them, you will be able to go to a particular key with confidence.
Tip 5 – Get into a regular piano practice routine. Try to play for 5 to 10 minutes every day. If it is possible, play at the same time every day. That way you are building it into the routine of your day.
Tip 6 – Practice good posture. Your back should be pulled up straight and your forearms parallel to the floor. Keep your fingers naturally curved and your wrists flexible.
Tip 7 – Create a beautiful sound from the moment you play your first note.
Even when you are learning simple pieces of music, play the piano with as much expression and feeling as you can!
